The guy who did the introduction claims that The Corpse is the best Hellboy story of all time, but it's not even the best story in this volume. There's seven short stories in here, although using "story" to describe some of them is being generous, Mignola admits himself that at least one is simply filler. My favourite was Almost Colossus which ties up a lose end from Wake the Devil, and seems to introduce a new recurring character. Overall, this is the first Hellboy volume that's made me genuinely excited to read the next, rather than simply curious.

This was where I got a little tired of Hellboy and I still had 3 more to read. He is a great character, Nazi, occult-fighting, former demon of hell. And Mignola has a very interesting style. I just don't think these books are as great/smart/edgy/etc. as people think.
It gets repetitive and is a little prententious.
Of course, it still has a cool factor and I was always enthralled, just a little annoyed.

Those who know me know that I'm a sucker for a good short story collection. So a Hellboy short story collection, packed with action and folklore, is a guaranteed good time. It's a tough choice, but I think "The Wolves of Saint August" is my favourite.

This one is a collection of shorter stories instead of one overarching one. There is a Christmas one, so this one is perfect to read this time of year.
