This one is a collection of shorter stories instead of one overarching one. There is a Christmas one, so this one is perfect to read this time of year.

Pretty awesome collection of odds and ends tales that take place between Hellboy's birth? summoning? incarnation?and the events of Seed of Destruction (at least I think). The dates bounce around quite a bit from the 1950s to the 80s and 90s. Some were rather thin, but I didn't find myself minding all that much. Still don't know what makes HB tick other than a fierce dislike of all things "destiny," but as I noted before, I'm kind of in it for the atmosphere. Playing through Bloodborne right now makes me want to pour on the gothic and the visual style of this series as well as its environs and rich mythological syncretism just feels right about now.

Amazing art and engaging stories, a great mix of folk tale inspired stories that fit great for Hellboy to tackle. Since these are the first comics of Hellboy I've read before, I found the experience fun and exactly what I always thought the comics would be like, after watching the original movies with Ron Perlman.

Can't go wrong with this.

When I first read this book, about ten years ago, it was the volume I would recommend for people to try out Hellboy.

I'm no longer sure why that was.

Like some of the weaker Hellboy volumes, this is a scattershot collection of stories with no thematic or logical connection. Some, but not all of them, take place during Hellboy's wandering period, where he just sort of drifts from brief adventure to brief adventure, with no immediate consequences or satisfaction. Some of them set up big events down the line, some introduce characters who'll be important to the BPRD mythos, but the collection as a whole, feels completely thrown together.
