I love me some Gideon
Let me get this off my chest first, I ABSOLUTELY ABHOR 2nd PERSON POV, and yet, it suited this story so perfectly that I loved it.
Gideon was everything. He was light and dark, fluffy and hard, kind and cruel? I’m not sure that that last one is entirely correct. But, he was so sweet! And I enjoyed being immersed in this story in a way that I haven’t been with other stories.

I really wanted to enjoy this book. I typically read 1st or 3rd person books so reading a romance novel in 2nd person was really different. I probably should have DNF'd the book when I meant to at about 15% but I didn't want to give up solely for the authors choice of writing style.
That probably wasn't the best idea. The text was riddled with editing errors and sex scenes that felt unnecessary for the story (which I almost never say!). I think if the story had been in 1st or 3rd person with a more fleshed out FMC, this would have been 3 or 4 stars for me.

Reading in 2nd person point of view can be so immersive and also showcases the strength and power of words. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and plan to continue the series.

The writing really needed another round of edits, plus the characters were just boring me. I also was quite tired of reading in the 2nd person perspective.

My DNF is temporary and has nothing to do with the quality of this book. I love the mothman. I love the angst. However, I am a stoner and reading second POV is tripping me tf up. I like Earl gray, it's my favourite, so that also fucks me up... 😭 Again, this book is written well and I love the characters but my brain hurts.

Listen. Was it good? No.
Did I enjoy it?
…
*sigh* Yeah. I did.
The dialogue (especially for the first half) is painfully bad. The way Gideon talks reminds me of how a child might attempt to emulate adult speech: like with this forced, caricature of sophistication. And then there’s the protagonist (only referred to as “you,” because this is second-person POV), who actually talks like a child. She’s immature to an absurd degree for someone who’s meant to be 30 years old, and lashes out about every little thing. OH! And then there’s any of the scenes with Lowell, the werewolf. Those include some of the most awkward and poorly-written lines of dialogue I’ve ever read.
HOWEVER. That being said, the worst of it seems to be confined to the first half. Things get better after the midway mark for some reason. I’d also like to note that I found the spice to be surprisingly satisfying, despite my complaints about the writing quality of the rest of the story. If there’s one thing I think the author wrote well, it’s the sex scenes.
And for what it’s worth, I didn’t actually mind the second-person POV. I thought it was imaginative to allow the reader space to insert themselves into the story as the main character (even if, for most of it, I found that difficult to do since her behavior is so damn cringey.)
