It gets added to the pile of books I'd like to finish in another life but likely never will in this one.

What a weird, creepy book. I would have given it 3.5 stars if anyone seemed to act with a sense of horror or morals at the end. That being said, I could not put it down. I thought I had it figured out, and to an extent, I did, but it did not go down as I thought it would. You certainly don't expect it to play out as it did, based on the beginning. That being said, now I want to read this author's other book and look forward to others.

This is a really good, very creepy suspense novel. At first, it just seems like a family drama, then you slowly start to realize that it's really dark and twisted. Highly recommended for fans of good suspense novels. It has a similar tone to author Ruth Ware's thrillers.

This was excellent. The story was a quiet sort of suspense, and it didn't rely on many of the tropes/cliches modern suspense novels often do (showing instead of telling, trying too hard to shock the reader, twists that don't make any sense...), which I appreciated. I really enjoyed getting to know each of the 3 narrators individually, to understand their motivation, and to piece together their stories. My one complaint is that at times things moved a little slowly for me - I really didn't have a clue where the book was going until I was over halfway through. Overall though, definitely one of my favorite books of the year and would highly recommend to anyone who wants a good mystery to unravel.

Beautifully told, with interesting characters. The pacing was slow, but the twists were heart wrenching, even if you guessed ahead of time.

Angie Glass has everything she thinks she's supposed to have. She's married Paul, who swept her off her feet while they worked at the same small resort in northern WI and she's just given birth to her first child, a son. But all that domestic bliss goes out the window when her niece calls and informs them that Paul's brother has committed suicide and her mother is missing. Paul and Angie travel to upstate New York to care for Ruby and the longer they stay the more Angie learns about Paul and his brother and the secrets and lies that exist in marriages, including her own. Ruby's character is fascinating to unravel and the overwhelming sadness of innocence lost from recognizing how power and control have shaped all of the women's lives in the story, permeate the entire book.

This was a very good follow-up to Swanson's debut novel, The Bookseller. I liked the first novel more for its soothing tone. This was more of a suspense, but still had a lot of that characterization I so enjoy in novels. I can tell the author is a Liane Moriarty fan because she builds her characters in a similar style, with good insight into motivations. Although, I will say that the female narrators are much better rounded than the male supporting characters. I came away from the novel feeling like I never really knew the brothers, even as their women would understand them.
Other than the characters, the suspense was OK. Some placements were a little heavy-handed, a little too convenient, but a story must move along after all, so I get it. As with most suspense novels, I let my imagination get a little out of hand and came away with a slight sense of disappointment. But I found the book to be a page-turner, with above-average imagination on the author's part.
As a whole, I had a good time reading this book. I look forward to more from this author.
