Lawrence presents relationships as complex in a subversive manner. The crude, explicit sexual imagery confronts the reader with Lawrence’s defiance towards social convention and euphemism. Additionally, Lawrence overthrows gender norms, depicting Lady Chatterley’s lustful inclinations and infidelity.
Lawrence is less revolutionary however, in his portrayal of masculinity and disability. A man is regarded as only vital and of substance when he is physically able, carrying a gun, and crucially potent. Clifford sadly fails to meet this criteria and therefore in his disabled form is considered a child.

Y'all
This book was terribly depressing. I mean, the poor girl apparently never has an orgasm until she gets with Michaelis (who is terrible and sounds like he has a skinny penis), and even then she has to bring herself to completion on her own after he has already finished. AND then he makes her feel bad about it. And I kind of feel like the first time she banged it out with Mellors... he kind of raped her. Maybe I just read it wrong.
Her husband is a lame lunatic who makes her feel trapped inside their sad estate and keeps pretending they have this deep, loving connection when really she just wants him to shut up and stop reading stories to her so she can go up to her room to masturbate... or go find the gamekeeper.
I mean, the author's writing was really good. I love reading classics because the writing is just so different from modern day fiction. I can see why the book was banned, though. I was assuming people were just being sensitive because that's usually the case with these banned books... but there were a lot of fucks and cunts and penises in this book. But cunt wasn't used in a derogatory way... if that makes you feel any better.
Anyways, it was interesting to read... just sad for women in general.

Skimmed a lot of this. I saw another review that said this book would never have become popular without its placement on a banned books list, and I agree. I read several books recently that referred to this book so figured I should read it for background’s sake. There’s much better stuff out there. Oh well, glad it’s over.
