LOVE'S RECIPE was a very strong debut romance and I liked how much Mila Nicks really brought creole food to life, as well as the small town of St. Aster. I like when an author can really immerse you in the setting and Nicks does this really well for a first book. The beginning is a little heavy and slow as we see Nick struggling to deal with his grief over his mother's death. He's let her beloved restaurant fall into disrepair and neglect due to a lack of motivation and what's probably depression. When Nick hires Rosalie, who is filled with fire and passion no matter how much she struggles, he begins to come alive again.

I liked Rosalie and Nick together and they have a lot of common ground to build on for their relationship. It was also nice to see characters date for a bit instead of jump into bed (not that there's anything wrong with that, it's just a nice change of pace). I'll admit to finding Rosalie's daughter a little annoying but I'm not a kid person so that's probably just me. I do think the ending wrapped up a little too neatly considering all the animosity between Rosalie and her mother as well as with her ex Clyde, but overall this was a solid book.

Content Warning: Death of a parent and grief; loose references to depression, though not explicitly called that

This was a short and sweet romance that left a smile on my face. At points, it was a little cheesy, but a lot of people love that! I would have enjoyed a little more depth in the characters; I felt like we were just scratching the service. However, I still liked reading this when I wanted something light and breezy. I think it would be a nice vacation read.

This was such a cute romance! I always love a good single parent(s) romance and this one was so good. The characters are so relate able and you feel so much for them. This was a little slow in the beginning and is a slow burn romance but, the reading experience was enjoyable.

Rosalie thought she escaped her boring life and controlling mother when she left Louisiana to run away with her boyfriend. Now seven years later and with a daughter, she returns home to live with her mom after getting divorced and quickly picks up a waitress position at a run down local restaurant. The only issue is that the new owner, Nick, is still grieving from his mother’s death and can only concentrate on raising his daughter. With Rosalie’s determination to better her situation, Nick is set on a course for change and a rediscovery of his love of cooking.

I enjoyed this book especially because of the role food played in it. The only issue is that even though I got to know the backstories and emotions of these characters, I didn’t connect with them. I had a good time with this but I’ve come to realize it’s not the most memorable.

In Love's Recipe we follow Rosalie who after leaving her home when she was 17, returns 7 years later with her 5 year old daughter. Rosalie does not have a great relationship with her mom but is left with no choice but to return home when her husband disappears on her. On her first night back in town Rosalie takes a job at Ady's, where she meets the owner Nick. The restaurant is a far cry from what it used to be when she lived there before but but with Nick's reluctant help they start to turn it back around. I found this to be a pretty straight forward contemporary, the love story was cute with two little 5 years old thrown in to the mix, things progress nicely until a miscommunication and the everything is solved. It was definitely a fun read but not one that really wowed me. At times I also found the language a bit jarring, curse words would randomly be thrown into the dialogue. I have no problem with this type of language but just felt like it was a little out of character. The book was also a bit steamy at times so be warned if you are not into that. Over all the book was a fun read and loved the parts that dealt with the cooking. Thank you Netgalley and RDP for my advance copy.

I genuinely enjoyed myself. Really. Apart from the love romance I loved the food. This book will make you hungry for love and food.

This book really made me think about how love can be destructive or positive, depending on the people you love.
At the end of the day, your love for yourself has to shine through and be prioritized.
