This book was incredible; however, I would definitely rate it for a mature audience. The sexual content, language, and abuse are quite prevalent in the first third of the book.

Really impactful novel. I enjoyed the book despite the harsh and heavy topics weaved throughout.

I found this book both hard to like but also lovely at the same time! It is a hard story because of some of the things that happen are sad and abhorrent. It deals with subject matter such as rape, racism, scarification and having your babies taken from you.

The thing I liked about this book was that even though the sister's letters were never responded to, they kept writing. They had hope they would see each other once again and writing to one another even if they would never read it would help them keep their strong sisterly bond. This part of the story was beautiful.

Always a five star read. For the nostalgia, I re-read around the time I went to see the new version of the movie. I plan to re-read again in another few years.
