‘I think it pisses God off if you walk by the colour purple in a field somewhere and don’t notice it.’

I loved this so much! It’s a beautiful story about intergenerational trauma within the black community in the South, and one woman’s relationship to God after how he’s treated her.

It’s sensitive and inspiring, and treats it’s characters with dignity, but what is not often focused on, and it’s a shame that it’s not, is that it’s a dual POV story, with Celie’s sister, Nettie, making up the other POV.

Her perspective, as relayed through her letters to her sister,
which covers her time as a missionary in Africa,
adds a lot to how the story may be read. As she gains spiritual enlightenment as well as a greater knowledge of the world outside the one she’s always known.

It’s a message of hope because we see how things can exist variably in different cultures all around the world, and in that way we can see the path to salvation and liberation.

Whether or not it’s a message to us from God, it’s a reminder to all of us that peace and beauty has not deserted us as long as we can notice and imagine it, and I think that’s wonderful.

I read this in one day, first time in a long time that a text has drawn me in to the point of feeling I can’t put it down. This book was very beautiful to me. I related a lot to the religious musings of the characters/author. The characters were well written and had depth, I appreciated that there was a level of humanity to even the worst of characters, by the end of the book there were very few that I still felt anger towards (except for Pa that man was just a weird pedo). The explorations of race, feminism, sexuality, and human nature were all very intriguing. It all read well because it was clear these were subjects the author was well versed in and cared about. I cried a bit at the end. There was always an underlying hopefulness, and I’m glad the characters got a fulfilling ending.

This book was great although at some parts I was confused or a little disinterested overall it’s an amazing book and I feel as though the message of female empowerment is so great and overcoming challenges also a great point. I will say it might be a hard read because of the topics in it so I would say there are definitely trigger warnings and to educate yourself on what they are before you choose to read it or not. I would say this book is in my top three favorite books I read this school year.

Really impactful novel. I enjoyed the book despite the harsh and heavy topics weaved throughout.

I don't have the words. Everything from the tone, to the plot and characters is just something incredibly special.
