intense, thorough and passionate dissection of the cruelty and banality of british india. forster is pretty cool for this. I wasn't exactly thrilled by the story for all of it (especially the first third) and all of the characters were kind of annoying, but I think that is deliberate as none of them are martyrs, they are all real (just annoying) people.

So easy going - and then wham!
Quentin Tarantino could learn a lot from E M Forster. He'd learn that there's no need to pile on the menace in the early stages. The shock, when it comes is much more effective if the reader/viewer has been led into thinking all is ordinary and relatively safe. Forster is a master story teller, and a true philosopher as well.

Book club selection for August 2010. Couldn't finish it in time, and have to relegate it to my abandoned shelf for now. Sorry, E.M.

I thought I was going to really enjoy this book after the first few chapters but as the story went on I found myself skipping over parts and just generally becoming quite bored with it.

I wouldn't say I hated the book but I was disappointed as I loved Howard's End so much. Maybe I had set my expectations too high.

I rate simply: 5 = liked it, 3 = meh, and 1 = didn't like it.
