I will admit that I did enjoy the book more this time around than the first time that I read it back in high school. There were many things that I actually did not remember and other things that I did not quite catch the first time around. This reread has helped me seeing everything with a new found perspective and I am mesmerised with how beautifully written this actually is.

Everything within those pages was written for a reason with a purpose and the whole of it provides a cruel and true depiction of the society of the time and the human condition.

4 stars! I think that this book does a very good job embodying the mentality of its time period, and creating a meaningful social commentary! While the ideas it presents and responds to are not quite as prevalent today, they still exist. If anything, it’s an excellent glimpse into the mindsets of the era! I really enjoyed the description and dialogue- they worked together well to create vivid atmosphere and character, as well as some humor!

A literary classic, Gatsby centres around the party host and smuggler Jay Gatsby. A man of "new wealth" in the rich part of Long Island, he secretly harbours a deep love for the wife of a nearby family, whom he has known for years. As the narrator Nick Carraway learns more about the enigmatic Gatsby, the more events begin to conspire to topple the self-made man from his throne.

I first read this book in English class in high school but did not remember a single part of it. I enjoyed re-reading it now and remembering all of the symbolism, the plot, the characterization of both Gatsby and Nick. I would not recommend it if you struggle with purple prose, as Fitzgerald can get flowery with descriptions or use some (now) obscure term for seemingly no reason. The plot is fairly straightforward and predictable, and because of the third-person narration it is hard to understand Gatsby's motivations. An enjoyable read nonetheless!

It was alright. A classic but as most are it was kinda boring. Character dynamics confused me lol

I first read this book when I was 14. I didn't get it. Like no shot. I was just trying to look smart by reading classic novels. I think I get it now though. Fitzgerald writes as impressionists paint. His conjured images are fuzzy, flowing, and full of feelings. Everything is enveloped with a faded glow of melancholy that is wholly immersive and dreamlike. This writing style fits the hedonistic party lifestyle that the novel deals with perfectly while supporting the reflective tone as well. I love the novel's conclusion about how money causes people to be childishly apathetic and put their blinders up to the problems that they cause with their recklessness. If you read this book in class and hated it, I encourage you to give it a second look with fresh, more mature eyes. Maybe you'll still hate it idk.
