This is a military based new series that Livia Grant gives us. If you're acquainted with her Black Light books, Call Sign : Thunder gives us our first rodeo into Ryder Helm's mercenary company.
An "accidental" rescue mission brings Allie and Zach together but they have a lot of obstacles to overcome : an overprotective father, a bit of age/gap, a definite social and money gap, and, what is the principal trope of that book in my mind, the "hero-worship" syndrom.
With a subtle touch, the author gives enough depth in her characters and enough action in the story to make that book an absolute page-turner.

For me this is a book of two parts, and that's fine because both of them are well written and captivating. The first part is more of a romantic suspense, full of action, peril and excitement. Allie is drunk on her first taste of real freedom and makes an immature decision that places her in grave danger. A blend of blind luck and coincidence places Zach in the right place to help rescue a drugged Allie from either sexual slavery or death.

Allie becomes dependent on Zach, but is the attraction real or due to either the drugs she was given or her hero worshipping him?

I liked both main characters, Allie was naive and foolish at first, but then she is just shy of being 22. Zach wasn't so much a man whore as he was a guy who didn't want relationships and was honest about this. Despite this being a novella/short story (taking less than 2 hours to read) I did still feel a connection to both characters. I also believed in their connection and the chemistry they shared.

We then move on to the second part of the story, which totally had me hooked but was over too quickly for me, I wanted so much more. We have Zach rescuing Allie again, but this time from her herself. We get some glorious hints of D/s possibilities, I particularly liked that Zach gave Allie options and choices at this point. Some books go down the Dom taking all control line but this reflected the true choice aspects of SSC.

The book ends on a HFN aspect, which is understandable as this was originally part of an anthology. These always have restrictions on the length of the story so I guess the author was limited in what she could do. Whilst I would love for Ms Grant to find the time to extend this into a full length novel, I also want her to keep producing new material! Wanting more of this story is a positive sign of how good it is.
