Dark Corners by Megan Goldin
I give this book 4.25 stars.

Terence Bailey is a killer. Imprisoned for breaking and entering, he is a key suspect in the murders of six women but they have never been able to make the charges stick.
With his release date approaching, Bailey gets a visit from Madison Logan, a young influencer with a huge social media following.
Hours later, Madison is missing.
True crime podcaster Rachel Krall has never heard of Bailey, but when the FBI's only lead ends up at her door, Rachel must immerse herself in a cut-throat world to find the answers to the ultimate question: how do you find a woman who doesn’t exist?

This is book 2, but both books can definitely be read as standalones as the stories aren’t connected.
Told from Rachel and Martinez POVs,chillingly interspersed with the killers thoughts.lt is well written, gripping and fast paced with short snappy chapters.l was enticed into the storyline by lots of little twists weaved throughout. The topic of social media influencers and part of the book being set at a convention really had me hooked.Rachel is a great character, smart and gutsy and I enjoyed her developing relationship with Martinez.lm really hoping there will be another book!
With thanks to Netgalley,Megan Goldin and Canelo for my chance to read and review this book

my fourth book from Megan Goldin and i enjoyed all of them! i felt so engaged while i was reading this book, totally losing time and investigating alongside Rachel. the short chapters made it a fast-paced story and i desperately wanted to find out what really happened.

one of the topics in this book is influencers. at some part, it reminded me of the menu (2022).

We're so desensitized to evil, so obsessed with finding out what makes the likes of the killer, that we forget about the victims. Not just those they kill, but those they leave behind.

This was a pretty solid thriller. I finished it in a day so it definitely had me sucked in. I really like this series, Night Swim was another good one. You know who the bad guy is pretty quickly but I didn’t figure out how it all tied together until the end, so there is plenty of suspense. I really hope we get a third Rachel Krall book bc I need to know what happens with Joe!

Not my favorite by this author. I loved the premise - and Rachel from Night Swim. Such an amazing book - highly recommend.
I did the audiobook for this one - I loved the creep factors, such as male voices during Rachel's podcast and the music. Otherwise, this one just fell flat for me. It lacked the anger and obsession.
Rachel becomes determined to feature the victims - rather than giving anymore energy to the killer, which I hope the author continues.

Rachel Krall is at it again! In DARK CORNERS we get to see Rachel doing what she does best. Solving crime! There’s a suspected killer about to be released, and the girl that just came to visit him is now missing. There’s also the business of the unsolved murders.

This was a great story that weaved all these aspects together. As usual MEGAN GOLDIN is a great storyteller who does not miss a beat.

The only reason this isn’t 5 stars is because you’re introduced early on to Thomas McCoy. By the end of the book I was expecting some kind of link to someone else. Some kind of reveal and there wasn’t one. It lost the a huge part of the suspense early on because you already know who the villain is. It made the ending fall flat. It’s still a solid 4 stars because it was a great story.

This was a fun sequel and an engaging story. The podcast pieces felt a little less prominent this time around than I remember them being in the first novel, which was a little disappointing since those are the parts with sound effects and music if you are listening to the audiobook, but it was still a fun listen, and I can see how perhaps they would be less interesting in the written format. While I would have liked perhaps a few more twists and turns, and there was at least one element of the investigation that I don't think ever really paid off anywhere (the internet ad), the ending of the story did throw me a twist I wasn't expecting, and that's always important for thrillers for me. I also found the results of the mystery to be fairly satisfying.
I didn't want Terrence Bailey to be guilty, so I'm glad he turned out to be a good guy in the end.
There was one aspect about the ending that I wish had been done better, however.
Rachel ended up playing the role of a glorified damsel in distress, which I didn't appreciate. Our protagonist should be the one making the biggest difference in the climax, not her FBI boyfriend. I do like that Goldin wasn't afraid to put Rachel in danger, but it probably could have been done in such a way that she intentionally did something to get herself rescued or to incapacitate her captor, rather than it just being an offhand comment she left in a voicemail that decided the entire ending of the book.
All that said, I'm glad that this turned out to be a series, and I plan to keep up with future installments as they are released.
