The end of the story is heart-breaking. I would say I admired the book in terms of creating a mystery surrounding the whole episode and the will he/won't he transform back suspense.
But in terms of satisfying the reader, I’d say the book fails miserably. All the questions about what, why, how is left to readers to interpret as they may.

I'm reading a book now that reminded me, at the beginning, of this novel. It's definitely for people who enjoy absurdity. One of the things I've always been amazed about with this work of art is how Kafka could sustain a narrative so long about poor Gregor. His unfortunate transformation does not allow him to do much, so writing about him must have been a huge challenge for Kafka. The author really met the challenge well. It's one of the most absurd works of art available, and it does, indeed, provoke a great deal of thought and contemplation, as well.

When I first encountered The Metamorphosis in my 11th grade World Lit class, I gave it a cursory glance, rolled my eyes, and proceeded to write the assigned essay using the SparkNotes.
I'm very very grateful I decided to revisit it before rating, cause I would have missed out on a wonderfully disturbing tale and an astute symbol of mental illness and alienation. I laughed, I cried, & I was left very discontented by the end - which is probably the entire point? Poor poor Gregor, I feel for you, I really do.
