A girl grows up on the reservation known as a beauty and with several men who want her. There's the full blood 'old' Indian. A cowboy. A rich white man. She grows up afraid of the full blood man, but she becomes fascinated. He knows the old ways and that attracts her. He can be evil when drinking and that scares her. It wasn't til the book was over that I realized the characters represented those groups of people that affected the natives. How the poor white man was used by the arrogant rich man. How the squaw girl was attracted by the white men but repulsed by the Indian that she secretly loved. How the Indian cop straddled the two worlds and his weaknesses were revealed in the ways he cooperated with whites.

Great poetic writing

Sasha LaPointe put this on her Instagram and I thought there isn't a higher recommendation, but then Louise Erdrich wrote the blurb on the cover.

This book roped me in, but I was always hoping the author would change the way she was writing the abusers. I got most of the way done with the book, but the victim continued to “fall” for the manipulating violent men & I couldn’t accept that any longer. There was also no need to objectify Louise’s body as often as the author did. I understand that was most of why the men wanted her, but you could’ve cut half of it out & the message would have still been heard.

This is one of the heavier books I’ve ever read, but my god. Fantastic writing throughout. Language slows down in the most disturbing parts and forces you to sit in them. The last line of the book was strikingly beautiful in its simplicity.

dark, challenging, but so important. this book is a haunting portrayal of life, love, justice, fear, and identity. its imagery is extraordinary, and you feel as if you are right there next to each character. this book is bold and brave, and i will be thinking about it for a long time to come.
