A fun, fantastical set of stories set in 1930s Algeria, from the point of view of a cat. Unique artistic style, interesting and sympathetic characters, a lot of wit, and wry observations on human nature and religion. Looking forward to the next volume.

Interesting "slice of life" story. Illustrations are evocative rather than realistic or "on model". Not quite sure exactly *what* I thought of it!

A disappointment, not for the content which was funny, smart and endearing, but for the aesthetics. Cursive is, frankly, hard to read and 70% of the text is written that way. The drawings made feel a little, I don't know, queasy after a while. It wasn't for me.

I found this on the shelf of teen graphic novels at the library, but it ended up being a pretty dense exploration of religion and philosophy, centered on the Jewish community in Algeria in the thirties. The illustrations are gorgeous and a lot of the panels were funny and smart and thoughtful, but for me the overall effect was kind of perplexing—a bit like watching a foreign film and understanding all the translated words but knowing there are parts of the story that elude you because you’re an outsider.

A fun light read. I really liked seeing the culture development and diffusion with both Islam and Christian. The cat was a cute and sarcastic narrator.
Graphic: Animal death and Colonisation
Moderate: Xenophobia and Alcohol
Minor: Hate crime
