It's been a long time since I read a romance with a MC who's as unlikeable as Thom. The book is told with dual POV's so we know he's a self-centered jerk. It's not a case of the other character misinterpreting his actions or he just looks like a jerk but actually has a heart of gold. That's definitely not the case here and he doesn't fundamentally change although he becomes nicer to Clay. For the most part I enjoyed this, partially because it was refreshing to read a character so self centered and fun to watch him gradually change. However, the end came really fast and the wedding plot made absolutely no sense. Lennie is supposed to be a fairly normal politician, but the wedding thing was completely bonkers, both from a character standpoint and also: In what world is the wedding of a politician's senior aides equivalent to a celebrity wedding with security and press helicopters?

I liked this more than I expected. It's a modern take on The Odd Couple with Thom as Felix and Clay as Oscar.

I liked this more than I wanted to. Every character was probably The Worst Human Ever but it was remarkable well written.

Is it politically accurate? Nope.
Will you form an attraction or understanding to any of the characters? In my case, no.
Does any of it seem at all possible? Haha no.

But…

Is it spicy? Yes (do not listen at work or with little ears!)
Does it actually talk about toxic masculinity, biphobia, and allyship in a thoughtful way? I think so.
Did I devour it in two sittings across 18 hours? You bet!

4/5 stars.

I liked that the characters were so unlikeable at first and grow on you very quickly, and they both had insecurities around really dating each other than pulled at my heart strings.

I loved most of this book so much, but the ending just crashed and died for me. I even went and relistened to the last 2 chapters again because I thought maybe I missed something. It just felt like none of the plot threads were tied up at the end and it was just very rushed? Which is a pity, because somewhere in the middle of this book I thought, "wow this is like a more adult version of Red, White and Royal Blue. This could be a new 5-star favourite!" but the ending was just so disappointing that that's definitely not the case. (It still has a HEA ending, though, if that's a dead breaker for you)

This book had a rough start. I almost dnfed because the characters were so unlikable. But I powered through it and as the story developed, so did the characters. They grew on me, mostly. This was a tense book. Not hanging on the edge of your seat tense but the characters interactions and such.
