It was a little underwhelming to what I’ve heard about this book. I’ve heard all these things about it being a murder mystery which it kind of was but they didn’t really look into the murder and try to solve it the selves which I was expecting. However, until around 250 pages in that when they tried to solve the murder and that’s really where it started to get interesting. It is a very fast pace book hasn’t really taken long to read just not as interesting as I though it would be. It’s not really made me want to jump straight into the next one like the “good girls guide to murder” series did.

I knew going into the book it was at least partially based off of one dimensional characters - 'The Breakfast Club' adjacent. I had no idea the characters would be so problematically one dimensional.

***SPOILERS***

The beauty queen is actually unhappy in her not-so-perfect life?

The jock is gay and is dating a model boyfriend? - What a gross stereotype of Queer culture.

I kept reading thinking eventually there would be some sort of subversiveness to these cliché characters, but it never happens. It's just another middle aged writer writing about the high school experience in reductive ways.

All of that *may* have been forgivable had the ending paid off. There are so many good whodunits where the puzzle pieces fall into place slowly creating a true sense of exhilaration when the picture is revealed. The ending of 'One of Us Is Lying'? Oh, okay. :|

This book was entertaining. There were some points or sentences that I had issues with every so often. For example, "She's mostly looking at Cooper, though. There's not a female teacher at Bayview who can resist his all-American charm." Which just had me like ??? That's not a normal or okay thing. He is 17 and the teachers are adults. Also, the writing and characterization was all pretty basic. I felt like some of the dialogue was written how a very stereotypical teenager would sound, with a lot of "totally"s and "like"s. The plot twist or truth or whatever you want to call it was pretty good. I guessed it like halfway through the book but again it was a pretty fun book to read.

Wow these murder mystery books get me every time. I always think I deduced “who done it” and then that person turns out to be completely innocent. I could easily see the motivation behind all four major characters, but none of them seemed like a killer, which led me to continuously a switch my suspicion until I gave up.

The real story behind Simon’s death is masterfully crafted, and the narrator does a fantastic job of orchestrating everything.

This book was kinda predictable. In the middle of the book I had already guessed who did it, and I really lost interest after that and didn't finish the book.
