As volume 1 of 11, I didn't expect this to be tie any ends or progress the plot and it really didn't. The character development was all over the place, the way characters reacted to and pursued events didn't really make sense, and a lot of the internal monologue gave me whiplash. That said - it's a very enjoyable, chaotic mess of a book.

Yes, the romance is dark. Yes, the characters are dark and violent. Despite that, it's a very funny story (even though as an English reader I'm sure I'm missing out on a lot of jokes) and I enjoyed the characters enough to stick with it.

Do keep the trigger warnings in mind - there's violence and sex from the first chapters onwards, and while the descriptions aren't incredibly graphic there are a lot of detailed descriptions/mentions.

I've only read the first book and I'm already loving this series. I fell in love with Mo Ran immediately. Is this what love at first sight feels like? He's such a funny character, and honestly we vibe so hard. All the characters are fantastic. Their personalities shine through in their interactions with one another. It's very easy to love them all. At first I found myself shipping Mo Ran and Shi Mei, and while I still ship them it has become easier to root for his Shizun.

The plot is interesting so far. I'm very curious to see where things go from here and I can't wait to untangle the mystery that is being laid out. I'll have to buy the next book ASAP since my library doesn't have it. (There's always inter-library loans but I like to read digital.)

This is definitely a series I want to have in my personal collection.

Couldn’t get behind Mo Ran as a character and I’m not a fan of
Chu Wanning having feelings for him that young.
I just don’t think this book is for me and that’s ok.

I found the translations too poor, and the content too unsuitable. It was very very triggering, which made the jokes come off wrong.

This is my first time reading such a story, and while not what I expected I definitely enjoyed turning each page. There are definitely adult themes in the story, it is maybe teenager friendly, but the story was otherwise engaging; rich in mythos, the story has the characters in a world that can easily confuse the reader if they are not somewhat familiar with the mythology. The romance itself seemed to fall a little flat, so I won't be grabbing the sequel, but that may be the norm for this series and simply doesn't jive with me.

Definitely an interesting and enjoyable read, I would recommend getting a physical copy of the book so you can enjoy the artwork within!
