I was really enjoying this book until about the halfway point. The characters were well dine and intriguing. The setting could have been described a little more. But then the further I got past the halfway point…the more the book lost me. By the end I had no idea what was happening.

A short summary of this book would be that it follows a foster family for almost a decade in a small Massachusetts town in the 1950s and 60s. I could add that you experience life, heartbreak, trials and celebrations with this family. But this book is also so much more than that. It’s a powerful story about family and survival.

It’s been a while since I felt this emotionally drawn to a book. I don’t know how to describe it, but it was so heart-wrenching and beautiful. I loved the alternating narrators since each family member’s story and perspective was so unique and I truly wanted to know about each of them. These are characters I connected to immediately and I know will stick with me for a while.

Due to how busy life has been lately, it took me almost a month to finish this book! Now that it is done I am going to miss these characters so much! It’s a heartbreaker of a story, but easily my favorite this year!

Yes…… yes…. I love these types of reads that are just real people and real situations and they navigate it all and find love for themselves and others… wonderful

4.5 stars… I’m not sure what’s holding me back from 5 but it wasn’t quite there.

This is a heartbreaking yet hopeful story of broken children, child services and what truly makes family and what makes us whole. This is a powerful look at love, loss and healing. It is an exploration of cruelty and of kindness. I couldn’t put it down.
