The character development doesn’t feel quite rounded out because the characters regress but I do still enjoy the book. I like that she addresses women’s issues in the time. The food descriptions always leave me craving Indian food and the clothes sounds gorgeous! The mystery was well developed and complex but not Byzantine.

Enjoyable, albeit a bit convoluted in terms of the puzzle mystery. One or two aspects did not seem fully accounted for. I hope the family angle goes forward more in the next book, and that we get some sort of resolution about Perveen and Colin.

Perveen helps an ayah who has been accused of drinking an abortive tea. Very well researched with much detail about the extreme limits and brutal conditions placed on women. Insane misogyny is balanced with descriptions of fabulous food and intricate world building. The story is a complex web of intertwined threads all coming together in the climactic scene. Thoroughly engaging.

I've liked every book in this series and this was no exception! This one might have even been better than some of the others--there were so many moving pieces and factors but it never felt confusing or overwhelming. I was fully engaged the whole time. I love reading a series like this where they're definitely readable on their own but reading them all together gives you more insight into the characters and the progression of their relationships.

I loved this fourth book of the Perveen Mistry series. She always focuses on the restrictions imposed upon women in 1920s India. In this case, the book dealt with women's obstetric health and how a man could assault a woman in his household without recrimination. Fascinating information and characters I loved.

This is my favourite book in the series so far. Massey delved into Perveen's family life and her insecurities and biases while still delivering a compelling and complex mystery.
I'm already wishing for book five.
