Delightful.

Elements of a fractured fairy tale sprinkled amidst political wrangling in space. Lots of interesting lady characters and some utterly fascinating ferns. Recommended for fans of Scalzi’s Collapsing Empire series.

I’m waffling between giving this book 3 or 4 stars. The world building is difficult to follow, especially since the author introduces terms and doesn’t explain them until much later. Also, this book could benefit very much from a damn map.

The story, though! I thought the story was great, the political intrigue especially. It took me a minute to warm up to every character except the three Body-Maids, but once I was invested, I was INVESTED.

I quite enjoyed the world-building, the alt-science, and the light magic that set the stage for this fast paced, clever space opera. Can't wait to read book 2.

Okay, so Goodreads needs to get on the Untappd/Letterboxd train and (drop the e?) allow half stars. This was totally a 4 and1/2 star book for me. But even as I am less precious with my 5 stars for books than films (one) or beers (zero), I can’t go that far. Love these new YA titles like this and The Testing, where brain-power are at the forefront.
