More and more I find myself reading a book and wondering what I will remember. I believe that I WILL remember this story, because, how awful. But I don't believe I remember the main characters, or much of what happens other than the core.

I think I'd rate this higher if I had not chosen the audiobook, since I had some heavy driving this week. The story itself is so important, and it was really sad. Unfortunately, the narration was so flat. I wondered immediately upon listening if they were chosen for this particular book because they are indigenous people. I think it is wise that they are, and due to the gravity of the subject matter as well as the story, it was likely challenging to bring life to the text. Still both narrators sounded gravely disinterested to the point of being distracting, which is a shame.

I appreciate the boom in books that bring voice to stories that need to be heard by indigenous people, minorities, and women. I just wish I had picked up the book instead.

This story packs a punch! The main twist is alluded to throughout and I appreciated that it wasn't drawn out as a big thing. Instead, the central tension is about memory and who we are. We follow two families as their lives unfold in the Northeast (Maine to Boston) and how they intersect. It was beautifully written and I really enjoyed it.

So much to unpack from this book, but it was an excellent read on dealing with trauma and forgiving yourself and your family for what happens. Keeping the important things close and overall valuing the time you have with the ones you love being the most important thing at the end of the day.

Family dramas are not my usual thing, but this story of 2 indigenous siblings separated early in life and how this brother and sister have lives with ups and downs was a complete page turner with SUCH a satisfying ending. Fabulous.
