It was a really interesting book that provided a first-hand account of what it is like to grow up in NK. She is definitely courageous and I admired her ability to push forward in very uncertain and confusing times.

This is a memoir about a girl who grew up in North Korea and escaped. It gives a good account of what it’s like in North Korea and the completely miserable living conditions. The bravery of Yeon-mi and her family is a really inspiring story. I read one review that questioned the validity of her accounts but it seems to have been disproven. It’s worth reading for a look into the human suffering the North Korean regime has inflicted on its people that’s not really reported in the media.

I was hesitant to read this book because i was afraid i wouldn’t be able to relate or that i would get overly emotional. It turned out to be neither and that was a good thing.
The story telling is very compelling and i was able to listen to it with somewhat of a distanced mindset while also in an educational mode. That’s more of a personal observation than a commentary on the narrative. I was happy to be able to give it my full attention and hear what she had to say instead of succumbing to my own emotions.
I learned a lot from this. Thank you, Yeonmi. Opening up about this is so courageous. I appreciate learning more of what life is like in North Korea from someone who was actually there - not just hearsay or coming from a visitor/journalist. (Not to downplay their contributions.)
