I could not put down this mesmerizing book about a young woman who marries an impulsive, unreliable typewriter salesman in 1929, just before the Great Depression begins, and then finds herself entangled with textile mill worker about to strike. The setting and events and characters are fictional, but resonant and firmly rooted in actual history. The writing is lovely, too. And I am entranced with the gorgeous metaphor Shreve creates around sea glass, the "trash" that smashing and weathering and individuality turn into treasure.

look, i just don't like anita shreve's books. i have tried. i read the pilot's wife, too, to get a second opinion, and that didn't work out for me either. i found them both very oppressive.

I remember enjoying this book though at the time, I believe it was far above my grasp in relation to my maturity and fully being able to comprehend the weight of the plot. It wasn’t a wholly remarkable book but it was well written.

Review:
This was only the 2nd Novel ive read by Anita Shreve so i kind of knew what to expect even tho this one was abit different from The Pilot's Wife that i read a few years back.

The Characters were fun and interesting to read about. Honora was definately my favorite since i felt for her with how it seemed she was thrown into being a homemaker and newlywed so fast. I can only imagine how hard that must of been for her.

The Setting was beautifully described which made me feel like i was actually in 1920s New England while reading, especially when the scenery was described.

Overall a Good Book 2 in this Historical Fiction Series!! Cant wait to read more in this series and by Anita in the future!!

Definitely had a slow start and took a while to get in to. Once the book got going, I couldn't put it down.

Very interesting story. At times I found the change of perspective by writing through different characters a little frustrating but as I got further into the book I found it added to the story.

This turned out to be a great thrift find book! At first I didn’t think I would be able to get into it because it’s written in third person with the chapters alternating between 5 different characters. I thought that would leave me confused but just a few chapters in and I was hooked!

I didn’t know that this was a second book in a series but I would definitely say it stands alone. Would definitely recommend.

Enjoyed the writing, but the story is lacking the wow factor somehow.
