This is such a cool and creative series. I absolutely love the idea of sky ships and all the adventures that come with them.

So great, full of suspense and action, but still philosophical and deep. Love the series.

Unlike the previous book in the Edge Chronicles, this book is more of a true novel. Here we join Twig, who's been with his Dad for two years on an adventure to save Sanctaphrax from the greedy capitalists!
I don't remember these books being so gruesome when I was a kid. There's lots of death here, and in such a short book, its amazing how the authors make you care about the characters before they off them.
The worldbuilding continues to be great, but some of the character motivations don't hold up to adult scrutiny.

So much better than the first book, I can understand now why kids gets so sucked into this series. Looking back after reading this one, the first book is like the pilot of a tv series, taking you through various settings, introducing the different species, and setting up some of the plot point, but not spending a lot of time on actual plot.
In this book Twig must find his way back to Sanctaphrax, the city of academics, after his father's sky ship crashes while chasing the great storm in search of stormphrax, the heavy substance that keeps Sanctaphrax from flying off into the sky. Twig and his companions face terrors and trials and death along the way.
THis volume is much more violent than the last, and death is not uncommon in this world. While it's nice that the book doesn't tiptoe around the issue, it does seem that once someone dies, that is it, no more need to think about them ever. The death scenes themselves are not gory or detailed, more Grimm than King, and kids who like adventure and action should be able to handle it. The illustrations once again are the best part of the book and I am ready for the next volume.

On rereading I discovered I liked the main characters' personalities quite a bit less than I remembered. The world-building is brilliant, but harshness of the Edge struck me much more this time around.
