I REALLY wanted to like this book. Sarah Addison Allen is one of my go-to authors when I want to get lost in a world full of magical possibilities. I realize this book is not exactly the same premise, especially as it's written as an anthology with different authors, but I was hoping for something along the same lines. I felt that this book was a bit of a mess. I couldn't tell if the stories were supposed to be continuations of one another or be completely different stories. It seemed like some of the characters were the same, but they showed up in ways that seemed kind of forced to me. I also had a hard time reading a whole story written in NC mountain patois, and I'm from NC, so hearing people speak that way isn't new to me. Nonetheless, I found it distracting. Because of these things, I found myself just skimming pages to see if something would grab me before I got to the end of the book. Unfortunately, it didn't...
If you're looking for what you've come to expect from Sarah, I recommend you go back and re-read her previous books to hold you over until a new one comes out.

rather than try putting books in a 'not interested' folder, I'm going to claim I read them and give a low rating. Putting in not interested, the algorithm seems to think I like the book.

I usually don't like collections of short stories, but thought I should try it because I like the books by Sarah Addison Allen. I was disappointed. The stories lacked the magical feeling I was hoping for. The stories were okay, just different than I expected. The only story I loved was "Petey" by Kathryn Mugendie. It to me a bit to get into the story, but after that I just wanted to keep reading. I'll certainly read more by this author.

I only read Sarah Addison Allen's story. It was okay, nothing like what I thought she'd write compared to her books. She's one of my favorite authors and this was the only story I didn't read yet.
