It Ends With Us is not a romance and there lies the problem. The blurb to begin with is fucking misleading. But, to be fair, when do the blurb of Colleen's book actually say what they are about? But then the content of the book is like it tries to be a romance but at the same time it doesn't and the result is a mess.

SpoilerThere's two things I despise in books: 1) Love triangles and, 2) Going back and forth between present and past. And this book "had" both. The thing is when I began the book I didn't understand why there had to be a love triangle. It felt unnecessary, out of nowhere and I was annoyed that there were long chapters of just Lily's freaking diary. I hate love triangles and when they are in a book they overshadow everything else not allowing me to enjoy the book.

I honestly would have loved to read the story of Atlas and Lily written in a different way and all together, without getting mixed with the present. But, this would have made a different book because this is not the story of Atlas and Lily finding their way back to each other after so many years apart. This is the story of Lily. Lily living with her parents abuse. Lily finding herself in the same situation. Lily learning and fighting and ending the cycle. That's the story. So why oh why was Atlas introduce? What was the point?! It doesn't add to the story, it's just background noise. Why waste time with the details of the past and Atlas when he's not going to be a key role in the present? It's pointless. And it pisses me off.

I love Colleen, I really do, and the I get what she was trying to do, and I don't have a problem with what the book is about. I just think the execution wasn't the best, and because of that at the end of the book what I feel is disconnection. I'm glad Lily chose to break the cycle, and to a certain point I'm glad she will try again with Atlas but I feel that in general everything was underdeveloped which leads to me not caring enough about the characters or the story in itself.

I. LOVE. THIS. BOOK.

I was kinda hoping for a sequel, because
SpoilerI really want to know what happens now to Lily and Atlas and Ryle (and all of the characters) I just need a "closure" hahaha
. And this story also tackles a topic that most people shunned imho.

Naked truth? I love how Colleen writes her novels. Really.

WOW, I think this is the second book from Colleen that I have listened to, and just wow. I knew it had won awards but again I didn’t know what to expect. I don’t really read blurbs I just jump in. This book was heavy but also filled with hope and love. I am totally looking forward to listen to the next book, which is on hold from my library. Narrator was good and I loved he notes from the author at the end. Didn’t realise it was based on true events.

4.5 stars!! I finally gave in and decided to see what the hype was about this book after having it sit on my shelf for over a year. I have to say the message behind this book took me completely by surprise and I loved that. Of course I loved the idea of Lily having a childhood love story and I was rooting for Atlas the whole book, but reading how the kind of relationship Lily and Ryle had reflected on Colleen’s own experiences really did it for me. I appreciate the book more now knowing how much this story means to her and going through that emotional rollercoaster throughout the book was so powerful in a way. The only thing that threw me off was the Ellen entries and how mature the writing sounded from a young teen’s pov lol but this was an enjoyable read and I’m really glad I was able to read it!
