It took me months and months to read, think and work through these pages. And I think I have barely scratched the surface. It has greatly developed the way I think about spiritual direction and how God communicates with us. It has inspired me to become the kind of person that not only hears God's voice with clarity but lives in daily conversation with him, and beyond that, to experience ever-increasing union with Jesus.

"The best book on divine guidance I have ever read. I recommend it highly." - Richard Foster

Appalling

Working from a worldview influenced by Platonic dualism, Willard elevates human experience to the level of scripture and changes the Christian life to a life of saving conversation whereby we are saved from loneliness.

If you already know Dallas Willard, I don't need to tell you how amazing he is. But if you don't know him, think modern day C.S. Lewis type intelligence. Dallas is so profound in his writings about God that I often have to stop and re-read just to get a handle on what he is saying. This book is about how to have a "conversational" relationship with God, including why we know God WANTS to have this kind of relationship with us, and what to do if we're not hearing from Him. Just amazing. I'm on a quest to read every word Dallas Willard has ever written.

A very useful book that gives you practical and theoretical guidelines for hearing God's voice using a lot of references to Biblical passages and other scholars' works.

This was my first reading of this book; the first of what will probably wind up being at least three. I essentially just read through, not underlining or taking any notes, just to get a first impression. My plan is to read it again, paying closer attention to parts that really impress, grab, or inspire me. And believe me, there were plenty of those.

Hearing God is about exactly what it says it's about. "Developing a Conversational Relationship with God." And while it might appear that he is primarily speaking about audibly hearing God's voice, he is not. Willard is quick to clarify that there are many ways to "hear" God, and audible voice is not the primary means. In fact, he opines, the more mature we are in Christ, the simpler and quieter will be the means by which we hear God.

There are many points at which this book drastically changed the way I think about things, just as in other Willard works I have read. I wish I had discovered this man earlier, but God knew when I would be ripe to read these things.

I read this book with my Bible study and it was a great read for us all. It was challenging and well written. I liked how Dallas Willard blended practical advice for hearing God speak into your life while also providing a theological understanding of how He does/does not do this. There is no formula for this, but Willard provides ways to develop this aspect of our relationship with God. The most frustrating part of this was the author's style of writing at times--being very detailed and a little confusing. Some of his examples were odd too, but this was definitely worth the read.

Willard does an excellent job laying down the foundations of hearing from God. He also disputes many false teachings about the use of God's voice.

Excellent book, although not new information. Willard still speaks with pose and does not give shallow answers. This is a great resource for teaching younger Christians how to relate to God and how to hear from Him.
