I liked most of this book, and the melancholy of the primary character. It's a topical story, about an election in France in which the Muslim Brotherhood party wins after joining with the socialists. But for the Islamic Party, it's part of a plan to take over Europe, and it demands to control education and other social issues, because that it where its strength lies, and it's an intergral part of its plan. Meanwhile, our hero -- kind of a non-entity and a go-along kind of guy -- is forced to make a life-changing decision.

3 stars after reading, but 3.5 stars after an engaging book club discussion. Glad I read this for myself rather than just relying on reviews to get a sense of it. I was left wondering about many things - what does "submission" mean generally and, specifically, to the narrator (who by the way, is, at least in my opinion, a loser who commits to almost nothing)? are apathy and disengagement forms of submission? what is the narrator really being asked to submit to? and does he actually submit when it comes down to it? This one earns the stars because of the questions it made me consider.

I am not going to rate this at the moment because I read it in french, and my level of understanding is probably only about 60%. I can follow the plot but may well miss the nuances. When I read it again-the english translation is due in the autumn-I may venture a rating.
