I read this book shortly after it came out, so it's been quite some time, so my memory of the details is basically shot. However, what I do remember is that it is quite a good romp. I love Egypt and am an Archaeology major, so the initial premise really interested me.

Removing oneself from the technical side of reading and plot analysis, etc., the book is fun, mystical, and has that dash of history that many like. Though a part of me frowned at obvious historical inaccuracies, the other half enjoyed the fantastical side. If you just read it and look for the adventure in it, it's good fun, but I can understand how people have said otherwise.

I gave it five stars partially due to the nostalgia factor (I read this when I was younger and was immediately excited I found a book about ancient Egypt) and also because I am a sucker for historical fiction with enough of the mystical to mix it up. Also, a feisty heroine doesn't hurt.

Sadly, this is not the kind of book I've come to expect from Lindskold. The characters are extremely flat, the characters are rather stupid and the plot is predictable up until the point when it suddenly takes a left turn no one could have seen coming...

So much that was great but the conclusion was a let-down.

Compelling, uneven, ultimately somehow unsatisfying, but a pretty good read for all of that.

Adventure novels are so perfect for summertime, right? This book follows a cast of characters as they cross the Egyptian desert in search of a long-lost tomb. I picked up this novel because one of my booktube friends was hosting a read-a-long last month.

I like reading books set in far away lands- it makes me feel like I’m seeing the world, even though I haven’t actually traveled anywhere. This book started off a little slow for me, but then it did pick up. My favorite character was Jenny, the niece of the archaeologist who leads the expedition. She grew up in the American frontier, so she’s plucky, skilled with a gun, and unafraid to speak her mind. I love spunky female characters! In this book, there’s travel, codes/riddles, archaeology and adventure- all good things. I will say that the last third of the book took an unexpected turn, which I didn’t enjoy as much. I thought it was a bit weird, confusing, and philosophical. However, the parts I enjoyed outweighed the parts I didn’t like as much. Now I want to go on an expedition in Egypt and have an adventure!

I quite enjoyed this. But it seemed slower to start than the other books by this author that I've read in the past, and ended rather abruptly.

I loved Jane Lindskold's Firekeeper saga, so when I found this book I thought I'd give it a try. It starts out as straight historical fiction but diverts wildly towards the end, so if you're not a huge fantasy fan you probably won't appreciate those elements of the plot. I've read some reviews on here that described the characters as flat and one-dimentional, and I can sort of see how they could say that, but I still enjoyed the main protagonists and the often colorful supporting cast. What really kept me going was the pacing, this is a rolicking adventure from beginning to end that should keep you interested for most of it.
