This is such a powerful book dealing with sexuality, gender, race, and labor in the US (specifically upstate NY and NYC) during the 60s-80s, pre-stonewall riots to AIDS crisis. There is a raw honesty to it, and after hearing trigger warnings I wondered if it would be  intense. There are tense moments, but most of the horrors happen "off screen" and all are written with care. It seemed to me like the theme of the book is the need for unity. There were so many instances of 'us against them' even within targeted groups that would have benefited from a more united front. Sometimes it was clear the powers that be tried to prevent it, but other times it was just people going along with status quos or sometimes more like crabs in a bucket. 

I recommend the Spotify podcast read of this book if trigger warnings are important to you, although the volume/quality can be difficult at times. The trigger warnings are given at the beginning of each chapter, and the narrator warns with beeps before the intense scenes.

This book is so beautiful and I'm so glad I read it. It's no so much that the writing is super special, but the things it gives words to and takes the reader through I've struggled to encounter other places and the queer history/perspective it provides was incredibly valuable to me as well.
