“I strained to look into my future, trying to picture of the road ahead of me, searching for a glimpse of who I would become.
All I could see was the night sky and the stars above me.”
It was so brutal yet so beautiful. The lesbian experience is varied and diverse, and I am so glad that Fienberg wrote this book, but it is not a book for everyone, it is not a book that I would recommend. The story and the way it is written really grips you and each character is so intriguing, yet after almost every chapter I had to put the book down and just digest everything that was going on. If you want to read this book but the trigger warnings are a concern for you or you gave it a shot and it was not for you, then do not push yourself to read it.
Gender queer by Maia Kobabe and Homebody by Theo Parish came to mind as I was reading this book and I would recommend them to everyone.
Here are some other books I’ve seen recommended in the same vein as this book but I have not personally read:

Boots of Leather, Slippers of Gold: The History of a Lesbian Community by Elizabeth Lapovsky Kennedy and Madeline Davis
Tomboy Survival Guide by Ivan Coyote
Dagger: On Butch Women by Lily Burana
Making Gay History by Eric Marcus (this is also a podcast)
Bi Any Other Name by Lani Kaʻahumanu and Loraine Hutchins
The Persistent Desire: A Femme-Butch Reader by Joan Nestle

The most heartbreaking and visceral, yet beautiful and tender book I’ve ever read. Wow, wow, wow.
