What It’s About: This is part of a series by Amazon where popular thriller authors write stories with a common theme of deception. This entry deals with an island compound where a father is trying to protect his children from a war.

Plot: I love the concept of this series, and I think this was a clever entry to start with, though the twist at the end is fairly obvious if you’re paying attention, hence my rating.

Style: I loved how Ware used little details to ground the reader in terms of time. I enjoyed that progression in the story in particular.

I really liked the vibes of this one, which reminded me a bit of Little Eve by Catriona Ward, but ultimately saw the twist coming so it didn’t hit as hard as it could have.

This is a decent short read. A nice writing style and an interesting evolution in the narrative.

I really enjoyed this short story. I think it's pretty obvious what was happening from the start but the story still have me questioning. The way the story was written was really clever in that it felt so isolated and then at the end, jarring. At the end of the book I felt as unsettled as the characters.
