I'm not sure that Tintin counts as a journalist. He gets into trouble, he captures bad guys but he doesn't seem to report on any stories. This was another madcap adventure and a product of its times. Scary Indians, shrunken heads, black face. The art is still consistent and serviceable. The writing clear and readable. Quite a bit silly. But fun. 3.5 of 5.

It's weird reading the stuff of my childhood and discovering just how farcically stupid some cultures are portrayed as being. Granted, I'm reading the English translation of a French series, but I rather doubt is that far off - and it while I still enjoy the humorous elements that aren't treating other cultures as purely stupid, it's an uncomfortable experience.

This plot is a mess and a significant regression from The Blue Lotus. Way too much happens way too fast, and too much of it goes nowhere particularly interesting. I found it impossible to get invested in the mystery. Also a pretty lousy portrayal of Indigenous people (an unfortunate pattern in Tintin stories, it seems).

En La oreja rota (1935 - 1937) Tintín se encargará de recuperar un fetiche arumbaya robado. Para ello se desplazará a San Teodoro y Nuevo Rico, en América del Sur, dos estados enfrentados por el dominio de un territorio rico en petróleo. Hergé se basa en un conflicto real ocurrido entre Paraguay y Bolivia, la guerra del Gran Chaco. La forma de enfocar el conflicto me ha gustado: los intereses económicos de las grandes potencias y de las empresas petrolíferas, las revoluciones y los golpes de estado, la absoluta falta de escrúpulos de las empresas de armamento... Vamos general, piénselo usted. Eso le interesa. Se lo repito: declara la guerra a Nuevo-Rico, se anexiona sus territorios petrolíferos y tiene usted el 35% de los beneficios que realice nuestra sociedad. De este 35%, el 10% será para usted... Pero la trama, la aventura, me ha parecido de nuevo demasiado inconexa. La manera de construir la historia, a partir de una sucesión de pequeñas escenas, no consigue atraparme.

Je suis un grand fan de la série Tintin de Hergé. Quand j’étais enfant, je me rappelle lire ces bande-dessinées tout le temps avant d’aller au lit. J’ai récemment décidé de me relancer dedans et voir ce que mon esprit d’adulte pense de tout cela!
Je tiens à préciser que toute personne voulant se lancer dans la série doit se rappeler du contexte historique de cette série et de l’époque à laquelle vivait l’auteur. Certains sujets peuvent être politiquement incorrecte de nos jours, et certains thèmes abordés peuvent être sensible.
Tintin et L’Oreille Cassée est le 6e volume de la série. Je suis malheureusement déçu par cette histoire et j’ai l’impression qu’on revient sur les pas des premiers volumes avec des sujets politiques et quelques peu incorrectes. J’avais bien envie de lire l’intrigue de la statuette et découvrir davantage sur les indigènes d’Amérique Centrale et du Sud, mais le récit part sur une très, très longue parenthèse sur l’état politique du pays et on y perd le mystère principal sur une bonne moitié du livre.
Au final, ce volume ne nous rapproche pas des volumes plus récents qui sont, à mon avis, bien mieux rédigés; ceux que je vais lire par la suite. L’Oreille Cassée est une des histoires de Tintin qu’on peut mettre de côté sans y perdre grand chose.

I am a huge fan of the Tintin series by Hergé. I remember often reading these comics before bed as a child. I have recently decided to give them another read and see what my adult self thinks of it!
I would like to remind anybody reading these about the historical context of the stories and the times the author was living in. Certain subjects might be considered politically incorrect nowadays and some of the themes could be considered quite sensitive.
Tintin and The Broken Ear is the 6th volume of the series. Unfortunately, I am disappointed by this story and I have the feeling we made a few steps back and got back into the shadows of the first books with the politics and being borderline incorrect. I really wanted more about the statuette and the stories of the indigenous people in this book, but the plot drifts to a very long side story on the political state and loses the focus on the initial mystery set up at the start.
In conclusion, this volume doesn’t get us any closer to the more recent Tintin stories that are, in my opinion, way better. The Broken Ear is one of the Tintin stories that can be set aside without the fear of missing out on anything important.
