What is it with precocious red haired girls with names of two of the same letter in the middle (Anne, Anne, etc) that makes for such an appealing character?
Pippi is all the things kids love. She’s exuberant and energetic and exotic and eccentric. (I didn’t intend for those to all be e words but there they are.) She has the air of authority that kids only ever see in adults and struggle to believe they can ever possess. Her demeanor lends her the ability to carve out her own place in the world, sans the seemingly arbitrary rules from those pesky parents. She’s every kid’s dream character. I think the only downside in the book is that reading it to the more mischievous kiddos could be disastrous. They might get some wildly imaginative ideas from Pippi’s cleaning methods (ice skating with soap basically) or her choice of company (a monkey and a horse usually). The imagination itself is fantastic, but it could certainly lead to some dangerous scenarios.

Reminder to myself: proceed with caution before reading this to the more mischievous kids in the family.
