Excellent second entry in the Midnighters series.

Angst and secrecy became a divisive factor among the characters, and then the addition of actual research on my part into the landscape of the town and surrounding areas set me off so bad that I couldn't bring myself to continue reading. It's a shame, because the idea behind the book was really intriguing.

I liked this book, I did enjoy but I still felt a little disappointed with it. I'm not sure exactly what it is, maybe it's just because there's a cliff hanger and I don't have the next book, or maybe it felt a little short.

Things I liked:
The relationship between Jess and her sister is starting to seem like an actual relationship with Beth as an actual character rather than just a person in the background.
The history around 'midnight'and the last 50 or so years being revealed.
How the characters aren't all shown to be friends, but rather different people who have to get a long because of certain circumstances that have put them together
Revelations about characters pasts.

It's also darker in general, which I prefer. It makes the idea of midnight with it's darklings seem much more... real, in a way. It shows that things that people do have real consequences and it also gives a better atmosphere to the story. It makes it much more intriguing and a better read in general.

One thing that really has bothered me about this series so far is that we aren’t getting enough of the “extras”. The things that aren’t the direct plot, like characters and how they appear & such, world building, character building. I want to know more about the families of the midnighters. Like, what happened to Rex’s dad, what did they do to him? What about Melissa and her parents? I just want to know more.

Overall though the book was good, a LOT better than the first one. For some reason, despite the corny nature of it, the ending sentence just made my heart so happy. It just was a great great ending.

Also, the whole Melissa and Rex thing though to me is completely overrated and stupid and tbh I don’t like them together and them kissing just kind of ruined that for me.

I'm still really impressed with this author. His concepts for his books are so interesting & unique & very well thought out. Book 2 in this series was great with a speed racing climax

Not as strong as the first for me and it seemed a little busy with calculations, but then numbers are not my thing, and in the Midnight they are essential. It was interesting to learn more about the characters, particularly Dess and Melissa, both of whom suprised me in this book by not being exactly what I thought they were. A solid read just not as personaly as engaging as the first for me. Still looking forward to the trilogy being wrapped up in the last book

I thought this one was not as good as the first one. Of course, maybe it was only because I started school and did not have time to read this as quickly as I normally do. I thought the relationships were a little forced like the author thought that relationships were neccessary for a story and put them in at the last second. Do not read further if you don't want to know anything, but the "cliffhanger" at the end was a little uneventful.

So anyway, Jonathon meets Jessica's little sister. Um ok. That's cool... I guess....

First Look:4/5 I wasn't sure what I'd think of this book. The first one was pretty good, but not great, and the second book in a trilogy is usually my least favorite.

Setting: 4/5 It's an average little town that...isn't quite so average. Somehow I like it better during the midnight hour.

Characters:4/5 I liked all of the midnighters, except for Jessica. She's such a Mary Sue, and doesn't really have much personality. I liked the others, though, especially Dess. Her mind works in such weird, unique ways. Rex is also a favorite, just because his personality stands out. And at the end...*dies*

Plot: 5/5 Much better than the first book. Now that Jessica's got everything figured out, the real action can begin! It moved along much quicker, so I was able to get into it easier. It wasn't too fast, though. And besides, the ending is nicely intense.

Uniqueness: 5/5 This idea is genius. Time stops for everyone at midnight, except for these five. How cool is that?

Writing: 4/5 It was okay. Nothing stood out to bother me, but it wasn't amazing. The extra star is for finding all those thirteen letter words.

Likes: I love the whole concept of midnight.

Not-so-great: I feel like this is a really short review, but I really don't have much to say.

Total Score: 4/5 Recommended for fans of the series, or for fans of paranormal (actual paranormal) or science fiction in general. Just make sure you read the first one first. I might have even enjoyed this one more than The Secret Hour. It was exciting and thoroughly unique. It kept me guessing! Probably more in the 4.5 range.
