Very cute story. One measure of a book I like to take into consideration is how well it goes over with students. This was a success

Ballet Cat and Sparkles the Pony are friends, and they are trying to decide what they want to do together one day. Sparkles suggests different activities such as making lemonade, playing checkers and doing crafts. However, none of these things is ballet, Ballet Cat’s favorite thing to do. Sparkles is sad as he starts to spin and twirl, so Ballet Cat asks what the matter is. Sparkles has a secret that Ballet Cat won’t like. Will Ballet Cat get mad at him for keeping a secret?

This was a decent easy reader, 56 pages with a cadence that mimics a true conversation. The text is repetitive but expansive. "I know! We can play checkers." "Yes! Checkers!"
The plot is that Sparkles Pony wants to play anything but ballet, but Ballet Cat can't see that.
The plot matches the illustration using simple drawings that seem fluid and indicative of movement. This is a bit harder than other easy readers, needing some words to be sounded out like "magician", "lemonade" and "kicking, spinning, leaping". The text is large and easily read.
The book challenges the notion that friends have to always agree and shows that disagreement, compromise and discussing how you feel are valid feelings in friendships.

This is a fun, quick read. It would be a good addition to a story time that is focusing on disagreements and problem resolution.

Laugh Out Loud funny!
I think Ballet Cat and Sparkles is going to give Elephant and Piggie a run for their money!
This book is going to be so fun to read out loud to young readers.

For fans of the Elephant & Piggie books, a new early reader series by Bob Shea. Ballet Cat is cute and Sparkles the Pony is adorable, and they are good friends who don't want to hurt each other's feelings, but don't always want to play the same thing the other one does. A sweet story of friendship told in an entertaining way with engaging illustrations.

Early Reader. GOOD GOD I LOVE THIS BOOK SO MUCH I WANTED TO READ IT ALOUD IMMEDIATELY. I LOVE how you can tell perfectly the way in which the characters speak based on their expressions. It has an Elephant and Piggie feel, and I mean that in the best sense.
