First book I've read on this topic and it won't be the last. I found her examples easy to follow and I did read this without the workbook, so I'm unable to comment on the effectiveness of both.

The author stated behaviors that I was able to recognize and point me in a direction for more healthy and functional relationships with myself and others. I don't have any children so I'm unable to pass judgement on those sections, but I did feel like she put a lot of emphasis on the parenting aspect versus how an individual can go about correcting their own behavior -- again I didn't have the workbook, so that may be addressed there.

Either way I appreciated this book and am looking forward to starting this much-needed journey in my life.

Such an amazing book. My therapist recommended this after just meeting me. This book spoke to my soul and I mention it to so many people. I journaled while reading most of it. I hope to return to this book years from now and assess the areas in which I’ve grown. This book was very detailed and step by step.

A helpful book for understanding the causes, effects and solutions to what we call “codependency.” I appreciate how the book explains abuse and generational trauma as a major cause of codependency in our society. The anecdotes and stories in the book help explain what it is and it’s causes. I read the book in order to gain a greater understanding of what codependency is and how to approach it in myself and others. For that, I found it helpful.

I found it useful and insightful, as the first book on the topic I've read. However in general, I wasn't a fan of the author's writing style. She puts too much of her opinion in it (starting sentences with "in my opinion...") - I'm guessing her first book?

I bookmarked and highlighted stuff to delve into more and for that I have to say it's worth reading for anyone interested in codependency.  Skip over anything irrelevant though.

This book was recommended in the comments section of my favorite advice column, Ask Polly. As another reviewer stated, I always thought codependent meant the opposite of independent. It doesn't.

According to this book, it means someone who cannot establish self esteem from who they are independent of what they can do for others, it means someone who has trouble establishing boundaries. Interesting info, but I'm not sure what to do with it.
