I just loved this sequel. Pacat has created a beautifully tender love story, wrapped within layers of high-stakes political scheming, heart-wrenching secrets, and intricate world building.

The quiet, honest conversations between Damen and Laurent are perhaps the most captivating part of this book; the way in which they bare their souls to one another can’t help but have us root for them. The Regent’s malevolent influence seeps through every page, instilling Laurent’s situation with a sense of helpless isolation that is mirrored by Damen’s usurpation. But Laurent’s fierce cunning and Damen’s raw military genius forge these two into a force to be reckoned with, that, as Laurent says, Kastor and the Regent never could have anticipated.

Overall this was a perfectly paced sequel, with well drawn characters and a brilliantly crafted world. I’m very excited to read book three!

Ooh!!! Things are happening!! This is one of those political fantasy books where you don’t see any of the political machinations until the very last second. And it’s fantastic!! I love the way Laurent’s mind works and all the little things that he’s doing in secret that have huge repercussions later. I also loved that Damen is slowly coming to realize that there is so much more going on under the surface, both with Laurent and the political landscape that he never knew was there. There is just so much going on and what you think is happening might actually be something else completely. It’s such a fun ride, and the ending??? Didn’t see that coming, but I probably should have. Anyway, Prince’s Gambit is getting five stars!

The first book was absolutely perfect- and this one is, somehow, even moreso. The political intrigue was INCREDIBLE; there were plays here that caught me completely off guard and made my heart flutter at the sheer amount of thought & foreshadowing! So so good! And so so messed up!!

Impeccable dialogue and characters, as always- I just adore Damen and Laurent's relationship progression here so much. From hatred to tense allyship to hesitant friendship to the fragile care at the end here.... it's just impeccable ❤️
Truly such a joy, I'm literally buying book 3 this instant

The characters, relationships, and plot twists in this series are absolutely phenomenal. My jaw was on the floor several times. The best part is that all of the twists are foreshadowed and well earned.
Also I want to break Laurent down into a primordial goo, put him through a centrifuge, study the resulting pellet under a microscope and do chromatography on the supernatant. I'm so normal about him.
