This was a very, very quick read, a real page-turner. I think it was my 3rd Dan Brown book. I seem to have given it 5-stars but I am not too fond of it now. After reading so many of his books, I don't like the fact that he uses the same basic story-line template in all of his books.

Of course, I've read The Da Vinci Code and the slightly better Angel's and Demons, so I wanted to give his first novel a go.
Digital Fortress is a decent thriller about a code breaking computer that fails to break a code. It's a bit more specialised than his other books-lots of computer and cryptography talk.
Part of the book is the head cryptographer's husband running round Seville hunting for clues..this was the bit that annoyed me because it was so forced. A languages teacher with no investigative experience keeps stumbling across the people and things he needs to solve the case.
The parts at the NSA were more interesting. But, overall, this is a good beach read thriller- easy to read, fast paced, and characters with simple motivations.

SPOILERS:

An easy and enjoyable read but oh my god I was so frustrated at the very end when it took them about 20 pages to figure out what the whole ‘prime difference between elements’ code meant. This is supposed to be a room full of some of the most intelligent people in the US and it takes them that long to realise it’s the difference in number of neutrons between isotopes. It was a hilariously simple code (actually it wasn’t even a code it was a literal instruction) and the struggle they had to solve it felt very unrealistic.

That was one hell of an exhilarating read. The main character sort of pissed me off at certain points, and to be honest, the first few pages really made me cringe.

But other than that i really enjoyed it.
