What Matters Most is How Well You Walk Through the Fire by Charles Bukowski

"I will remember the kisses
our lips raw with love
and how you gave me
everything you had
and how I offered you what was left of me
and I will remember your small room
the feel of you
the light in the window
your records
your books
our morning coffee
our noons & our nights
our bodies spilled together sleeping
the tiny flowing currents
immediate and forever"

i love old introspective buk. this featured a lot more poems on life/aging/art and wisdom that can only be gained by being on earth longer than most. the last poem was a perfect ending. other highlights are
  • young men
  • the crunch (2)
  • odd
  • they arrived in time
  • combat primer
and many many many many many others.

With how large the book is there’s going to be poems in there you read over, ones you reread, and ones that will stay with you from here on. i can see why Bukowski’s style is imitated so much, i can also see how many people can get it wrong. you have to live the life to write the life, you can imitate a part well but usually not the whole.
