This book was so incredibly heartbreaking. Having read the book, and seen it performed, I know firsthand the impact "The Laramie Project" can have on people. It is something people need to read because it describes the easiness of hatred so well. This is a play about understanding tragedy and prejudice. Wonderful play.

TW: homophobia, violence, hate crimes, death
As a queer person, I had a hard time getting through this, so because of that I gave it 3 stars. If I didn't have such an emotionally difficult time reading this, I would give it 4 stars. I think that this book is an extremely important look into homophobia and hate crimes against queer people in the U.S. I definitely would give it a read if you want to learn more about the murder of Mathew Shephard and hate crimes targeting queer people. I would recommend taking it slowly though, as this is a very heavy read.

A play that revolves around revealing the truth, The Laramie Project is orchestrated in a series of interviews, focusing on the message that is said. On October 6th, 1998, 22-year-old Matthew Shepard was driven out to a fence in the woods where he was tied up and beaten into a coma that would later result in his death. All because he was gay.
With over 65 'characters', there are too many individuals to keep straight, but this is the reality. There are hundreds of people that make up a town. Hundreds of people that impact a situation. The events that transpired in Laramie, Wyoming demonstrate just this. Matthew Shepard died at the hands of two hateful and vengeful individuals, but as this play demonstrates, his death was not in vain. The message in this play speaks to millions, educating them on the fact that hatred is unhealthy and that no one should have to die because others disagree with their lifestyle choices. The Laramie Project highlights that Matthew was an individual who saw the light in everything through his last moments alive, and his death has managed to inspire this in readers and audience members alike.

Such an important play. I want to be a part of a theatre company that tours this play through small conservative towns. These interviews do an amazing job of capturing vastly different people speaking their own perspectives.
