I loved this book more than the last one. I felt like Kaz and the group had a better thought-out plan.

I have to say this story broke me.. I loved everyone and I was sufficiently surprised with the outcome

I LOVED this book! The characters and their relationships make this series just *chef’s kiss* impeccable. And then when the real action happens, I am on the edge of my seat. I cried a lot harder than I thought I would.. I was literally heart broken. And yet I still love this book so much.

After ripping my heart out, I still ended the book with a smile on my face. Because after all...

No mourners, no funerals

So i finished Six of Crows and dove right into this book because come on, that ending?! This book was an absolute delight! It gave us so much world building around Ketterdam and developed the characters we've come to love even more, um Wylan, what an absolute sweetheart. My Inej/Kaz love took on a new life, that intimate scene in the bathroom, oh my. Nina and Inej's friendship is also so beautiful and such a truthful telling of female friendship.

In so many ways this book gave me what I wanted, more heists, cons within cons within cons, character backstory; but it just felt like it ended a bit flat. I've read somewhere that Bardugo intends to write a 3rd book, set far in the future, which would be PERFECT and i would change this to a 5 star instantly, but it feels as though readers have been left in the lurch a little. There are so many potentials, Nina and her new powers and her mission with the druskelle, Jesper and Wylan, the entire plot with jurda parem, KAZ AND INEJ COME ON, need I say more.

Before the cliffhanger of the first book I actually envisioned the second book being a time jump, to when these kids are a little bit older, so I do feel it is inevitable. But god I just hope we don't have to wait too long!

Just like Six of Crows, I remain confused a lot. However, they are very exciting books with amazing characters. I think these books are too long, but when they are heavy on the action, they are REALLY good.

This is fine. I felt the quality of the prose itself took a bit of a dip from Six of Crows, the style of which I thought had a lot of cleverness and a good flow. The writing here is at its best in dialogue. The story feels… bloated. Each individual episode is engaging in its own right, but many of them are lengthy detours that go nowhere. eg: in the first act there’s a sabotage mission that sets the protagonists back and forces them to rethink their strategies, setting them up for further conflict and development. And that’s fine and good as a narrative maneuver, but the objective itself doesn’t end up being very consequential at all, and it’s a significant page count for something that doesn’t really matter. The characters likewise are individually engaging, and I respect the attempt to give your whole ensemble cast POV chapters and compelling arcs, but it starts to feel like it’s bogging things down. The actual machinations of the plot are delightful, and that kind of thing takes pacing and careful groundwork so that everything falls into place at the end; it just feels like it could have benefited from a solid 10-15% cut to the word count, and a reexamination of exactly what time needs to be spent where.
