"Humans need fantasy to be human. To be the place where the falling angel meets the rising ape"

Oh, simply a pleasure. Combines my favourite Discworld character, Death, with my favourite Discworld mechanic, gods and belief. Throw in Susan, all grown up and more amazing than ever, and that's me sorted.

Two things, to me, encompass the range of this book...
- Death's speech about how humanity needs to believe in the "little lies" like the Hogfather in order to believe the big ones, like "Justice. Mercy. Duty." (pages 380-1 in my edition)
- The fact that Death now has many cats (page 101 in my edition)

Endearing characters, searing social commentary... what's not to love?

One of the best Discworld books. Driven plot, superbly paced, well written, engaging, funny, enjoyable.

Would (and did) read again.

A heartwarming book and good fun for anyone who wants Terry Pratchett in the holiday season.
As often with Pratchett the middle of the book felt a little scattered at times with so much going on but that will probably be a feature not a bug for anyone who enjoys discworld. The ending wraps everything up in a lovely and satisfying way, calling back to many elements throughout this extensive romp of a book.

I did not expect to cry three times. More fool I. A fantastic story about childhood, and belief, and normality, and the sheer marvellous beauty of being human.

Jasmine read this one out loud to me at Christmas time when we were in quarantine. It was fantastic. I laughed, I cried. No, but actually. I was also very afraid at one point. It's an excellent Christmas story.

In typical Pratchett style there are lots of laughs packed in this book. His humor is biting and sharp, but funny because of the intrinsic truths that underline it. This isn't as strong as the Tiffany Aching series, but I find myself really liking Death and his granddaughter, Susan. At times the humor misses and there are the occasional odd leaps and plot turns that don't seem quite in kilter, overall however this is a fun, fast read and a good book. I giggle every time I picture the Death of Rats and have to groan at the terrible puns like The Grim Squeaker even as they make me smile.
