I was really enjoying this book until the last quarter when fridging happened. Absolutely hate the trope in books. It really brought to light the lack of diversity and misogyny in the culture depicted. I know most epic fantasy is pseudo medieval Europe but it's the 21st century. You're allowed to have female characters that aren't just the 'not like other girls trope. You can have queer characters and ones that aren't white as well.

I want to see where the story goes so I'll probably pick up the next book. I just hope it does a better job with its female characters.

I loved this book so much, it is now added to my all time favorites. First person pov is not my favorite, however this book kept me reading super late. The pace was perfect for me and the world building was good, the characters felt solid and real. The magic system was there but not really prominent, which I wish it had been. I wanted to learn more about the different talents that the Justices are taught. I absolutely love that the book was tied off at the end, I know there are more books coming but if you never read another book in the series you at least have a good closure in this book. So excited to continue reading in this world and series whenever that may be.

I really loved this book. I do see how some consider the beginning a little slow, but I am a huge nerd and I was really intrigued from the start. The magic system is fascinating and kept hidden just enough to cause me to starve for more information. Hopefully, some of the other Justices' abilities are explored in later books. I desperately want to know more about the animal communication powers!

The politics and the detective story were equally engrossing and perfectly catered to my personal tastes. I thoroughly enjoyed the character of Helena and Sir Conrad. Helena's innocence is a perfect foil to Conrad's stern devotion to his duties. Their relationship seemed almost a Batman and Robin allegory--again, huge nerd here!

I will be going straight into Tyranny of Faith!

3.5/5. Normally I would give a book with that rating a 4, but unfortunately this one leans more towards a 3. The premise was super intriguing so I had high expectations for The Justice of Kings, but unfortunately there was just something about it that didn't quite click with me. I would put it in a "political or legal fantasy" genre. It's very much a "courtroom drama" style of book so if that clicks with you, then you'll enjoy it. But if you're looking for a typical adventure fantasy, this probably won't be for you.

A solid 4 stars. I really enjoyed this book. It’s a Fantasy that’s very much detective/law and gore centered in 1800s Eastern Europe. Justice vs the church.
