Maybe I'm being too harsh, giving it one star. Maybe I'll remember it more fondly in a few weeks. Also, due to a book club pick, I'll be reading at least one more book in this series soon. Maybe that will change my mind? For now, though, I'm SO glad to have finished it...
YMMV, as always, of course.

Kind of an unusual book for me, but who could resist a book written on a challenge to combine Pokemon with the lost Roman legion?

This is a fun, exciting, fantasy with a twist on magic that gives it more of a technical spin rather than a mystical slant. The author's skill in setting up incredibly dire circumstances with exhilarating victories.

Simply could not put it down. Butcher is a phenomenal writer. Took me a beat or two to get my feet under me in the beginning, part of being thrown-in in the middle of action, but once I figured out what was going on I simply could not put the book down. Thank you for weaving such an engaging world!
Note: Gave me a chuckle to learn that, according to Butcher, this was the result of a bet that he couldn't combine ancient Rome and Pokemon. Bravo.

I haven't read this book (this series) in five or six years, and apparently in that time, I'd forgotten all the things I loved about it. Really nice to lose myself in the story and the rich setting and the amazing characters all over again! I'm looking forward to working my way through the rest of the series again as well. <3

I liked that this book kept changing character perception. I thought the middle of the book was slow but quite liked the ending.

As a fan of the Dresden files, I was pretty sure I would enjoy this book a fair amount. Decently put together story, okay magic system (still slightly confused by it). Definitely feels like a first book. I rated it a little higher than average though, as there were definitely interesting reveals I wasn't expecting and definitely took a different route in how it ended than I had figured it would. Definitely going to give #2 a try.

This was darker than I expected.
Also, if you can help it, don't random jump from urban to high fantasy. It's really disconcerting.
Other than the dark parts I was completely unprepared for this was a really good story.
Nothing like Dresden Files.
There's battles and politics and the occasional lack of common sense.
I'm interested to read the next book, but will need a little while to recover.
Also, I don't have it and have many new books I really should read instead.
