It started out slow but improved as the story progressed.

Can't say I am as enthralled by Hobb in this series. She still is a great storyteller but I found my interest waning.
The first turn off was dredging up old themes, primarily the memories of a race gathered over time. Then there was the young man, coming of age, stubborn, unable to see the bigger picture.
I also didn't like the warring internal selves. I felt like this ambiguity was resolved in the first book and then randomly re-surfaced without any explanation.
Griping aside I finished this one and still was entertained. Just don't feel this series is measuring up to Farseer and Mad Ship series.

Leed a Robin Hobb.

The main thing that brings this book down is that the only "main" character. (everything revolves around him).
Nevare, is extremely annoying, naive, stupid, stubborn, frustrating..
Sometimes I wondered how I enjoyed the book so, but enjoy it I did.
Hobb is a good writer and despite Nevare's obvious character flaws, the incidents surrounding his life keep you engaged and wanting to read it to the end.
It barely balances on 4 stars.
