I never really liked Curious George because my boyfriend's son constantly watches it on Netflix in bed with us, which means I have to watch it (or at least listen to it while I read a book on my tablet) as well. I find TV show George to be a dumbass who doesn't listen to/ignores simple directions and gets himself and a slew of other characters into trouble.

I'm not surprised that he is somewhat the same in the book. The Man in the Yellow Hat seems cruel in the book, though. He deliberately whisked George away from the jungle and took him to the city, where Yellow Hat proceeds to let George smoke a pipe and land himself in jail. I would've thought that if you were ballsy enough to take a wild animal from the jungle, you'd have enough sense to keep that animal contained. If anything, Yellow Hat should be in jail, too.

An early reading book, George is that curious child who mimics and tries out anything that looks interesting or engaging. To him the adult world is puzzling yet deeply interesting and his play amongst it gets him into much trouble. I really liked the illustrations throughout and can see how much of the way the writing has been set as well as framing and colour would have inspired those who came after (this book was published in 1941). As with [b:Clever Bill|1674924|Clever Bill|William Nicholson|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1332391337s/1674924.jpg|1669952] much yellow is used throughout and I wonder whether this relates to printing costs. It is interesting to note that the Reys left Hamburg to escape the Nazis.

From our permanent collection of children's books that were never unshelved. Okay man goes into jungle and absconded with a monkey to dump in a zoo, the monkey smokes a pipe and eventually get caught by a fat fireman and put into prison - perhaps not the most politically correct book out there. But a fun book nonetheless and one that shows a certain amount of freedom that children used to have more of before the age of Child Protective Services and over-zealous avoidance of minimal danger.

Reading this one as an adult it kind of makes me angry at the man in the yellow hat.

Reading this as a parent you wonder what exactly the man in the yellow hat does for a living. You also wonder how he was able to placate people after George gets into countless troublesome situations. I read this book to my son to help reinforce that we don't prank call the fire department. While I think George landing in prison was a little harsh, I want him to know it is a serious problem. George is always a favorite with my kids and they look forward to more adventures with him.

I really like the art style and illustrations. George is super cute! But I had a hard time reading this without also reading a story of imperialism. The man in the yellow hat tricks, kidnaps, and puts George in an animal prison (okay, a zoo- but still). And every time George does something wacky, it's like "silly George- he just doesn't know any better- let the man in the yellow hat come in and save the day." It made me a bit uncomfortable. I think the current books and tv show have probably transcended this, but I'm just saying that I was not as 100% on board for this as I thought I would be.

This was always a favorite when I was a child. I have to really read it with a child's eye because when I think too much about most of what happens in this book.... it ain't great.

I still love it.
