Voltaire might have been considered tolerant for his time, but the racism was still very much present. being against slavery doesn't mean he wasn't racist as fuck. đź«  His views on Jews and Muslims are also very prevalent in this book, and aren't much better (like, at all). Yes, I'm aware this is satire and a parody and all extreme circumstances are absurd to prove a point. It still doesn't excuse discrimination against certain groups of people, I do not care what century this was written in.
2🌟 because of the critique of optimism (which is why this book was created in the first place).

I read this first in college and decided to reread because (a) I was 1 book shy of my goal for 2021 and (b) it was on my shelf, and (c) I liked it the last time I read it. There was more racism than I remembered (typical white lady me), and lots of fast-moving violence, but so much of the writing still made me chuckle and marvel a few times. And "tending one's garden" has more allure than when I was 20.
