I went into this with way higher expectations than I should have had. I did not like it one bit. It also contains the weirdest take on imperialism ever, which can be dumbed down to “Imperialism is a bad thing, not because it destroys communities and cultures and is oppressive to the native people of the colonized area, but instead it makes the civilized colonizer a dirty savage.” I think that’s a worse take than saying imperialism is a good thing. The Congo natives in this book aren’t even portrayed as human. It didn’t even manage to do it’s horrendous take message in an interesting way. I found this book extremely boring and just not good at all. I really only read it to understand what people keep referencing.

Dark, full of metaphor and imagery, this book is not about plot. It is about morality and the corrupting nature of Imperialism. It broods atmosphere, and the reader feels the jungle all around, with danger and mystery lurking at each turn. A journey to read, it squeezes emotion out of you.

"Droll thing life is, that mysterious arrangement of merciless logic for a futile purpose. The most you can hope from it is some knowledge of yourself-that comes too late-a crop of unextinguishable regrets." (sic)

Absolutely racist & unenjoyable read. Just got a little higher score because the length and writing style made this book doable, especially in comparison to the terrible experience I had with another book I read at the same time.
